One-week intensive Meisner foundation course

If you would like to start the year with a deep dive into the Meisner technique, my one-week intensive foundation course will run from 20 - 24th January at the Cinema studio in Overtoom 301 in Amsterdam. The course will run every day from 10:00 to 16:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and until 17:00 on Tuesday and Friday. Meisner technique is one of the most respected and well-known acting techniques, created in the 20th century by American actor and teacher Sanford Meisner. It focuses on teaching actors to be authentic, spontaneous and to work from their guts. We will cover all the three pillars of the technique - authenticity, truthful emotional preparation and improvisation - and will learn how to work off the other person and stay in the moment, every moment. If you have studied Method acting, this course will give you a new set of tools with which to approach your work. Please note that this course is intended for committed actors and will require your entire attention. The course costs €350 including BTW. You can pay in instalments on request and if you are working as a performer already, you can apply for the Werkuigppo.nl grant. Please make an appointment with me for an online call to see if the course is right for you. You can do this by copying and pasting this link: https://forms.gle/dx8UdkSuBBHs36oP8S or you can message me on +31639881935. I am happy to answer your questions. I teach in English but you are welcome to the exercises in Dutch or your native tongue. Go to https://meisner.studio or find me on Insta for more info: @meisnerstudioamsterdam.

Training Didactics for Filmmakers

Are you a filmmaker with the ambition to work in education? Then sign up for our Didactics training by Judith Boessen (teacher and researcher in cultural education). The training is designed in such a way that you will learn the basics of didactics: standing in front of a group, the direct instruction model and the structure of an educational activity. In addition, there is time to practice yourself, there is room for questions, interaction and sparring with other participants. The training consists of two sessions. During the first meeting, you will learn how to use the Visual Thinking Strategy, a question-driven method to talk about film in class. You will learn how to sharpen your presentation skills to get your message across clearly and convincingly. And we will get started with the direct instruction model. In addition, the SLO core objectives of education will be discussed. In the second meeting, each participant develops their own educational activity or workshop that meets all the discussed didactic principles. You can then use this activity directly in practice. We offer this twice and the training consists of two sessions: For filmmakers in East Brabant & Limburg Friday November 1, 1:00-4:00 PM & Friday November 8, 1:00-5:30 PM (incl. closing networking reception) Location: Cwartier, Weert OR For filmmakers in West Brabant & Zeeland Friday November 15, 1:00-4:00 PM & Friday November 22, 1:00-5:30 PM (incl. closing networking reception) Location: Breda (tbc) Participation is free for (prospective) film teachers. Scriptacademy

Workshop for Script Developers and Dramaturgs

On October 4, ScriptAcademy’s annual Workshop for Script Developers and Dramaturgs begins. How do you present your analysis so that creatives can work with it? Effective communication is the key to success in a creative process. Over four Fridays from October 4 to 25, you will work with instructors Henk Burger and Gemma Derksen on the skills of a script editor – analysis, selection, pitching, catching, and editing – with a focus on giving and receiving feedback and professional communication. During the workshop, you will receive tips, tricks, and practical examples, practice a script review with graduated screenwriters from ScriptAcademy, and be taught by specialized (guest) instructors. This course has been specifically developed for professionals who develop films and television drama: producers, creatives, script editors, coaches, consultants, advisors, directors, and graduates in Film and Television Studies with practical experience. In doing so, ScriptAcademy is committed to improving the Dutch screenplay. I have mainly learned not to give my opinion, but to provide feedback based on the script/synopsis. This allows me to help the creator further in their/our search for a finished script that can be filmed. Safe and quickly trusting teachers ensured that I regained my self-confidence in giving substantive feedback. Gemma Derksen has worked as a Story Editor for over 25 years, including as an editor-in-chief at AVRO, NPS, NCRV, and BNNVARA. For HET HELE VERHAAL, she works as an advisor, script coach, and teacher. She currently coordinates the drama for broadcaster MAX, among other things. Henk Burger started as a radio and documentary maker and was an advisor and introducer at the Media Fund for many years. He worked as a dramaturg for NCRV, NPS, and since 2001 at NTR. In addition, he is a screenwriter himself for films (including After the Tone, Gewoon Vrienden) and radio dramas (including Luchten), and has been teaching at ScriptAcademy for 20 years as an instructor for the six-day Basic Screenwriting Course.
