Sextet (2007)

Een goedkope seksfilm van Eddy Terstall SEXTET gaat over seks. Het is een komische raamvertelling over de Nederlander en zijn relaties. Verschillende personages en hun bedverhalen passeren daarbij de revue, allen vol overgave gespeeld door een sterke cast van bekende acteurs en enkele bekende Nederlanders. Zo speelt Jan Mulder met verve de rol van ex-voetballer en ietwat impotente schrijver die met een jonge bewonderaarster in bed belandt. Katja Schuurman speelt een lesbienne die haar bed net zo lief deelt met haar vriendin als met Dieuwertje Blok of de 'Transsylvanische hulpstukken' Horace Cohen en Marc van Uchelen. Behalve het op hilarische wijze aansnijden van thema's als metroseksualiteit of 'kunstmatige inseminatie' speelt Terstall voortdurend met vorm. Sommige scènes zijn in zwart-wit of volledig geanimeerd en er is zelfs een historische flashback (waarin een Middeleeuwse knaap (Tygo Gernandt) en een rapenverkoopster samen het gezegde 'voor het zingen de kerk uit' introduceren in de Nederlandse taal. En dan is SEXTET ook nog eens een film-in-een-film. Een chagrijnige Vlaamse filmacademiedocent (Gene Bervoets) onderbreekt regelmatig de film om zijn klas filmstudenten te vertellen dat achter al die 'onnozele vormdingetjes' en het vele 'onfunctionele naakt' in SEXTET een ijdele Hollander schuilgaat met vlassig rood haar en een flinke midlife crisis. Echter, of deze fictieve zelfkritiek nu wel of niet terecht is, als frivole raamvertelling over seks staat SEXTET als een paal boven water.

SEXTET is about sex. It is a comedic frame story about the Dutch and their relationships. A number of personages and their bedtime stories cross the screen, all played with total conviction by a strong cast of well-known actors and a few Dutch TV personalities. Jan Mulder (ex-footballer, writer, TV personality) for instance, plays the role of an ex-footballer and somewhat impotent writer who ends up in bed with a young admirer. Actress Katja Schuurman plays a lesbian who is just as happy sharing her bed with her girlfriend as with Dieuwertje Blok (TV presenter in real life) or the ‘Transylvanian accessories’ Horace Cohen and Marc van Uchelen. Beside the hilarious way in which he touches on such themes as metrosexuality or artificial insemination, Terstall is constantly playing with form. Some scenes are in black-and-white or completely animated and there is even a hilarious historical flashback from the Middle Ages in which a young lad (Tygo Gernandt) and a turnip-seller (Marlies Bark) introduce into the Dutch language the expression which translates as ‘leaving the church before the singing’ (coitus interruptus). And SEXTET is also a film within a film. An ill-humoured Flemish film academy tutor (Gene Bervoets ) regularly interrupts the film to explain to his class of film students that behind all those ‘stupid style things’ and the excess of ‘non-functional nudity’ hides a vain Dutchman with downy red hair and a major mid-life crisis. However, whether this fictional self-criticism is well-earned or not, there is no disputing that SEXTET is a frivolous frame story about sex.
