Enjoy the most beautiful films from and about Africa in late summer! From August 28 to September 11, 2010, the Africa in the Picture film festival traditionally takes to Amsterdam's squares with its open-air screenings. All films are free!

On August 28 (Westerpark, park side of Cinema Het Ketelhuis) and September 5 (field at Community Center De Havelaar), LONDON RIVER (Rachid Bouchareb, 2009) will be screened: a moving film about the encounter between the British Elisabeth (Brenda Blethyn) and the African Ousmane (Sotigui Kouyate), both searching for their children after the bloody bombings in the London Underground in 2005. Kouyate received the Silver Bear for Best Actor for this film.

With films about Senegalese mbalax and Afro-American soul, Africa in the Picture guarantees a true musical cinematic explosion! On Friday, September 3 (August Allebeplein) and September 10 (Makassarplein), YOUSSOU N'DOUR. I BRING WHAT I LOVE (Elizabeth Chai, 2008) is on the program: the award-winning documentary that follows the Senegalese pop sensation Youssou N'Dour in his life as a musician and a Muslim. On September 4 (Olympisch Stadion) and September 11 (Wittenburgerplein), you can watch SOUL POWER (Jeffry Levy-Hinte, 2009), about the legendary concert in 1974 during Muhammad Ali's Rumble in the Jungle in Kinshasa, Zaire. A vibrant recording of one of the most mythical gigs ever, featuring BB King, Celia Cruz, and the godfather of soul James Brown, among others! A must-see for every soul lover!
