CULTCORNER PRESENTS: EMMANUELLE
Melkweg Cinema is screening the infamous and controversial Emmanuelle films from the 1970s this month. Following the breakthrough of Jaeckin's EMMANUELLE, the first openly erotic film intended for a mainstream audience, many spin-offs soon followed. The Italians, in particular, tried to capitalize on the hype generated by this cult erotic film. For instance, cult director Joe Damato made no fewer than seven Emmanuelle films between 1976 and 1978, two of which are being screened this month. From slavery to erotica and horror, many bizarre genre blends were created. From this delightful mess emerged a new star: Laura Gemser, the Indian beauty who became an icon of the genre.
