Cult director John Waters (USA), better known as the "King of Trash," is the main guest of BUT 2009. Waters is known for his use of camp and shocking scenes. He began directing low-budget productions in the 1970s, in which the transsexual Divine played a prominent leading role. Today, Waters still makes films, including with big stars such as Johnny Depp and John Travolta. These films seem to border on so-called mainstream Hollywood productions, but appearances are deceiving. They are miles away from them. During the festival, John Waters classics on 35mm will be screened, including 'Polyester' (1981), 'Desperate Living' (1977), and the original version of 'Hairspray' from 1988.
Waters will be present at the festival on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 September.

Film lecturer Jan Salden will give a lecture on Friday, September 11, about the work of John Waters within the context of the BUT film (b-film, underground, and trash).
