5 days of B-film, Underground and Trash films
From September 9 to 13, enjoy five days of extraordinary cinema during the fourth edition of the international BUT Film Festival in Breda. Films you didn't even know you had to see are screened at a festival that sweeps you away to another side of film.
Cult director John Waters (USA), better known as the "King of Trash," is the main guest of BUT 2009. Waters is known for his use of camp and shocking scenes. He began directing low-budget productions in the 1970s, in which the transsexual Divine played a prominent leading role. Today, Waters still makes films, including with big stars such as Johnny Depp and John Travolta. These films seem to border on so-called mainstream Hollywood productions, but appearances are deceiving. They are miles away from them. During the festival, John Waters classics will be screened, including 'Polyester' (1981), 'Desperate Living' (1977), and the original version of 'Hairspray' from 1988.
For fans of horror and underground, 'The Tourist' by Iskanov is highly recommended. The Russian-born director will be present at BUT 2009, where 'The Tourist' will have its world premiere.
The festival opens on 09-09-09 with a racy film from the B-film genre, 'Modern love is automatic' (2008) by director Zach Clark (USA).
If the names above don't ring a bell, it is because at this festival you can expect anything but ordinary films. BUT stands for B-film, Underground, and Trash. B-films are films made on a small budget, films that do not fall under a major production studio. Underground films are films that push the boundaries of what is acceptable. They often contain explicit imagery. Trash films are over-the-top films in terms of content and visuals. An interesting selection of films that enthusiasts will enjoy and the rest will be surprised by.
In addition to films, BUT also offers performances, lectures, workshops, and art. Including a Monster Exhibition featuring work by Dutch Underground filmmaker and artist Jaap de Vries. All of this at a location that aligns well with the festivities in terms of atmosphere and setting makes BUT 2009 a complete event.
After the BUT Film Festival, John Waters will also visit Melkweg Cinema in Amsterdam on Sunday, September 13. There, he will introduce his insane comedy 'Polyester', followed by a screening of his legendary 'Pink Flamingos'.
