This documentary shows how the film industry is increasingly utilizing technical tools to enable interaction with the audience. Interactive Storytelling
The fourth short documentary by firestarters and Discovery Channel highlights the changing role in which we interact with films. Over the past two decades, digitization has caused an explosive growth in innovations that were also immediately available. In the explosion of technical possibilities and imagery, stories require an active contribution from the viewer. Furthermore, more and more technological tools are at hand, resulting in an infinite number of forms of expression. Experimental filmmakers today are already using iris scans, Google Street View data, apps, and other techniques to provoke interaction. What does this mean for the future of film and documentary?

Interactive Storytelling takes place against the backdrop of IDFA Doclab, where the world's most innovative storytellers meet year after year. This includes filmmaker Brent Hoff and robot artist Alexander Reben, who invited the audience during an interactive DocLab Live event to forge a story together using lie detectors and other futuristic devices. Alongside this duo, we follow DocLab curator Caspar Sonnen, Bruno Felix of the multi-award-winning studio Submarine (Ouwe hoeren, Collapsus), Alexandre Brachet (Prison Valley), and actor and theatre maker Bert Hana (Straatfantast, Suiker).

firestarters the series is a unique collaborative project between Discovery Channel Benelux and firestarters by Vodafone. This documentary series tells the stories of creative forerunners, young enterprises, and innovative projects. firestarters visits Unseen, Amsterdam Dance Event, Museum Night, IDFA, and Amsterdam Fashion Week, where mobile technology sparks or brings new ideas to fruition. firestarters the series: #04 Interactive Storytelling is the fourth in the series.
