Silent Ones by Ricky Rijneke winner of Best Debut Film 2013

The Dutch feature film Silent Ones by Ricky Rijneke has won the award for best fiction debut at the SCENECS International Debut Film Festival.

During the Grand Gala hosted by Victoria Koblenko, director Ricky Rijneke received 'The Dutch Golden Stone Award' from jury member André van Duren.
The professional jury consisted of directors Jos Stelling, André van Duren, art director Farhad Vilkiji, and film producer Hans de Wolf.

The jury report:
An extremely meticulous search for the essence of film. Based solely on a narrative foundation consisting of a cargo ship at sea, a threatened woman, and a secret from the past. Nowhere does the film attempt to please the viewer cheaply; time and again, you are watching something that is harsh and strict, yet still amazes and moves. The consistent cinematic approach and the magnificent acting make this film a universe entirely of its own.

Silent Ones tells the story of a young Hungarian woman (Orsi Tóth) who, after her younger brother Isti disappears, sets off aboard a cargo ship to fulfill her promise to him. A surreal trip balancing on the edge of life and death.

The SCENECS International Debut Film Festival puts new directors in the spotlight. There were 165 applications from 35 countries. The eighth edition of SCENECS took place from Wednesday, November 6 to Sunday, November 10 in Amersfoort.

Silent Ones was previously nominated for the Tiger Award, the competition program, and the flagship of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Subsequently, the film won various European awards and was screened at a dozen festivals, such as New Horizons in Poland, Moscow, Sarajevo, Mumbai, Prague, Los Angeles, Sao Paulo, and Montreal.

Silent Ones was produced by Rotterdam Films (Rijneke & van Leeuwaarden) and was made possible with support from the Netherlands Film Fund and the Mondriaan Fund. Distributor Contact Film is releasing the film in the Netherlands. International sales are handled by the French sales agent Wide Management.

Rijneke took home 'The Dutch Golden Stone Award' for the second time. She also won this prize for her first short feature film, WING, the fish that talked back. This multi-award-winning film was nominated for the Leopards of Tomorrow, the official competition program of the prestigious Locarno Film Festival, and was subsequently screened at more than 50 international film festivals.
