CinemAsia Film Festival seeks up-and-coming talent in FilmLab

The CinemAsia Film Festival is once again seeking up-and-coming film talent from the Netherlands. The 7th edition of the Asian film festival, taking place in Amsterdam from April 1 to 6, 2014, is once again centered around the CinemAsia FilmLab. Three filmmakers will have the opportunity to create a short film about Dutch-Asian identity, with the theme 'FOOD', within a highly intensive production process leading up to the festival. The films will have their world premiere during the festival in Amsterdam.

CinemAsia is calling on young filmmakers to submit a proposal for a short film based on the theme 'Food' – Food plays a central role in Asian (family) relationships. Offerings and eating take place not only during daily meals, but also during important life events such as births, weddings, and deaths. Mothers of the first generation of Asian immigrants mainly stick to traditional cuisine, while younger generations switch more easily between Dim Sum and Big Mac. What significance does food fulfill in Asian communities and how does it influence Dutch food culture?

Training in script development, production, and budgeting
Unlike previous CinemAsia FilmLab editions, the script development component has been added to the program. Script development contributes to the quality of the films and forms an important part of the training of future talented directors. The selection consists of two rounds. From all submitted proposals, six participants will first be selected who qualify for training in script development. Subsequently, the six participants will have the opportunity to pitch their project to the selection committee. Three winners will be chosen from these to make their short film under the guidance of experienced filmmakers.
Experience in filmmaking is not required; however, strong emphasis is placed on motivation and a good story that explores Dutch-Asian identity with the theme 'Food'. In addition to professional guidance, a budget of 500 euros is made available.

In addition to culture and entertainment from Asia, CinemAsia offers a breeding ground for emerging media makers and a place for the exchange of stories about the Asian diaspora. Doris Yeung, initiator of the festival: 'We have been organizing the CinemAsia FilmLab since 2006. The previous editions were a great success; every time we are surprised by all the talent walking around on Dutch soil. For the upcoming edition, we also hope to produce a number of fantastic films with the winners.'

The CinemAsia Film Festival, now organized annually, showcases current events in Asia, from major blockbusters to inspiring documentaries and independent productions from China, Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, and more.
