Urgent and harrowing: The Refugee Church film

A former politician (Helmert Woudenberg) wants to force media attention for the rejected asylum seekers, who must leave the Vluchtkerk on June 1st, by pretending to be a hostage.

In a combination of fiction and reality, the film was shot during this very last week of the Vluchtkerk. For the past six months, the Vluchtkerk provided shelter to over 130 rejected asylum seekers. Actors performed among the refugees, partly improvising with them, knowing that on June 1, the refugees must actually leave the Vluchtkerk and become homeless.

Bright Richards, who plays the leader of the refugees, fled Liberia himself 20 years ago. Helmert Woudenberg plays a former party leader, inspired by Job Cohen, who previously took a stand for the Refugee Church. The shooting felt harrowing and urgent to the crew and cast.

'De Vluchtkerk' will premiere at the Utrecht Film Festival. It is a co-production of HUMAN and producer Talent United, directed and written by Paul Ruven and Kees Vlaanderen.
