Jaap van Heusden's 'THE NEW WORLD' selected for International Film Festival Rotterdam - premiere: January 30

The new Dutch television film 'De Nieuwe Wereld' will have its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), in the 'Bright Future' programme. This new film by Jaap van Heusden can be seen on Wednesday evening, January 30, at 7:00 PM at the Pathe Theater in Rotterdam; there will be two follow-up screenings later in the week.

Bianca Krijgsman plays her first dramatic lead role in 'De Nieuwe Wereld'. Besides her fame from 'Plien & Bianca', she has previously appeared in 'Minoes', 'Alles is liefde', 'Dolfje Weerwolfje', 'De Troon', and is currently back in the 4th television season of 't Schaep met de 5 Pooten'. Her co-star is the West African actor Issaka Sawadogo, who previously starred in 'Sounds of Sand' by Marion Hänsel and last year shone in the internationally acclaimed film 'The Invader' by Nicolas Provost, which was selected by IFFR, San Sebastian, Venice, and the Toronto Film Festival. 11-year-old Teun Stokkel makes his feature film debut; he previously starred in the TV series 'Het Gordijnenpaleis van Ollie Hartmoed'. Other roles are played by Janni Goslinga, Tjebbo Gerritsma, Saskia Temmink, Eelco Smits, Mimoun Oaïssa and Annemarie Prins.

'De Nieuwe Wereld' is directed by Jaap van Heusden, who previously made the theatrical television film 'Win/Win'. In 2010, this debut film premiered at the IFFR and ultimately became the highest-rated Dutch feature film there. Over the past two years, 'Win/Win' has been selected by no fewer than 25 international film festivals and awarded the 'Prix Geneve-Europe' for Best Screenplay, the 'Best Actor Award' at the Brooklyn Film Festival, and a 'Special Jury Mention' at the Mannheim/Heidelberg Film Festival.

Jaap van Heusden also directed the One Night Stand film 'Ooit' (Golden Calf Nomination for Best TV Drama) and recently the television films 'Drone' and 'Het Offer'.

- Short synopsis 'The New World' -

Mirte works as a cleaner at the asylum seekers' registration center at the airport. She is a headstrong woman who tries to push her past away through routine. She also unintentionally keeps her young son at a distance. When Luc, a West African, is brought in, Mirte is impressed by the charismatic refugee. Through their encounters, Mirte seems to regain a grip on her life.

A film about loss, fleeing, and love from an unexpected source.

'De Nieuwe Wereld' was written by Jaap van Heusden, together with Rogier de Blok, previously responsible for the scripts of, among others, 'My life on Planet B' (MovieSquad Award 2012), 'Calimucho' (Forum Berlinale and Winner of the Dutch Critics' Prize), and 'RU There' (Cannes Un Certain Regard, 2 Golden Calves). The producer is Marc Bary/IJswater Films, known for award-winning films such as 'De Poolse Bruid', 'Diep', 'Skin', 'Win/Win', and 'Lotus'. The cinematographer is Jan Moeskops (including 'Brammetje Baas', 'Win/Win', and 'Lijn 32').

'De Nieuwe Wereld' is a Telefilm and a co-production of IJswater Films and the Public Broadcaster NTR, and was made possible with financial support from the CoBO Fund.

The television premiere takes place in April.
