This autumn, the film 'Tula The Revolt' will be filmed on Curaçao. This international English-language film tells the story, based on true events, of Tula, the leader of the Great Slave Revolt on Curaçao in 1795.

Jeroen Krabbé plays the role of Governor De Veer, who held sway over the island at the time, which was plagued by crop failures, an economic recession, and a standstill in international trade. The other roles in the film will be filled by Dutch, English, American, and Curaçaoan actors.

The story of Tula is also unique from an international perspective, because the uprising on Curaçao began peacefully and was initially waged with words rather than weapons. The film is based on the book 'Tula, Verloren Vrijheid', which will be available in stores at the end of October.

'Tula The Revolt' is an action film, but at the same time a character-driven film that gives the audience insight into an important yet underexposed piece of national history. In 2013, it was exactly 150 years since slavery was abolished in the Netherlands.
