IN THE FOG (IM NEBEL), the new feature film by Sergei Loznitsa, is competing for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival (May 16-27, 2012). During the festival's press conference today, it was announced that the film will have its world premiere at the Palais des Festivals. The film is a co-production of ma.ja.de (Germany), Lemming Film (Netherlands), Rija Film (Latvia), Belarusfilm (Belarus), and GP Cinema Company (Russia).

IN THE FOG is based on the book of the same name by the Belarusian writer and social activist Vasil Bykov (1924-2003). It is set in the western border region of the USSR, 1942.
The local partisans are fiercely resisting the German occupation in the region. Two partisans are ordered to assassinate a suspected collaborator, Sushenya. The innocent Sushenya desperately tries to prove his innocence but is taken to a forest by the partisans. One-on-one with his enemies, deep in the dark forest, he is forced to make a moral decision under immoral circumstances.

Sergei Loznitsa's feature film debut MY JOY was also selected for the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival in 2010 and was released in the Netherlands by EYE Film in the summer of 2011.

IN THE FOG was made with the support of the Netherlands Film Fund. Match Factory handles worldwide sales, and the film is being released in the Netherlands by Contact Film.

It was previously announced that director Marco van Geffen has been selected for the prestigious Cannes l'Atelier 2012 with the Lemming project IN JOUW NAAM.
