To mark the hundredth birthday of Italian film composer Nino Rota, Filmhuis Den Haag is organizing a program of films for which Rota wrote the music, which can be seen in 17 cinemas nationwide.

Virtually everyone recognizes Nino Rota's work upon hearing it: the instantly recognizable Love Theme from The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola) and that of Romeo and Juliet (Franco Zeffirelli), for example, or the unparalleled music from the Fellini films La Strada, La Dolce Vita, and Il Casanova. In addition, Rota composed for directors such as Luchino Visconti (Rocco ei suoi fratelli, Il Gattopardo) and René Clément (Plein Soleil). His work is of impeccable musical quality; these are autonomous compositions that hold their own without the accompanying film images. One could even argue that without Rota's contribution, the films for which he wrote the music would have become less great masterpieces.
