Last year the Shadow Festival was declared dead, but since then there has been a small revival in a squat. Mainly old, well-known films are being screened.

The Shadow Festival was founded 10 years ago by film lecturer Stefan Majakowski out of dissatisfaction with the 'commercial' and large-scale IDFA. Following criticism of his policies and the unorthodox treatment of staff, funding was discontinued in 2009. A new start

The Shadow Festival is going ahead after all, without subsidies, in the Schijnheilig squat. The organization was hastily put together on an ad hoc basis; the first contact between Shadow and the Schijnheilig squat was established a week before the first film was screened, and five days before the start, the center was still threatened with eviction.

Schijnheilig handled the entire organization for this edition; Stefan Majakowski was only involved in the programming.

"Although the festival features films whose existence was already known, it did manage to put together a program in a week and have a screening room open for seven days where people can watch beautiful documentaries on the big screen with free admission," said one of the organizers.

The films are introduced and there are long post-screening discussions, as we have come to expect from previous editions.
